In the novel titled The Messenger written by Markus Zusak, each part of the novel features a suit of card which is symbolic of Eds messages. Ed has to protect the diamonds, become the clubs, thrust deep finished the spades, and spirit the hearts. Ed also needs to know that he is not the messenger but the message, when he receives the joker card. Zusak uses cards to epitomize Eds journey.
Diamonds and clubs atomic number 18 symbolic to Eds journey as he had to protect the diamond and survive the clubs. Ed has to protect the diamonds by helping the large number through their problems. He does this by saving a unripe fret and daughter from their abusive husband who rapes his wife every iniquity while drunk. Ed also helps an old woman from retirement by pretending to be her deceased husband who died at a young age. Ed also helps a young girl by giving her an empty shoebox to show she has the self-confidence to shine no matter what. Ed has to survive the clubs by dealing with aggressive problems. He does this by helping doubting Thomas OReilly with getting people to his church. Ed also helps a young buzz off Angie Caruso by giving her an ice-cream cone to hasten her feel loved. Ed also has to beat up Gavin move to make his brother realise how much family means to him.
The diamonds map that the people he needs to help are incomparable and do need protecting. The Clubs symbolise that they were all part of a group and needed to know that they all belong.
Spades and hearts are symbolic to Eds journey as he has to dig deep through the spades and feel the hearts. Ed has to dig deep through the spades by having to search through records to have who he needs to help. He does this by finding the peoples names through clues in books. Ed helps the Tatupu family by giving them Christmas lights just in time for Christmas. Ed helps her mother by ending the tension between them.
