Francisco José de Goya y Lucientes (1746–1828) is known as the most influential painter of modern art from fresh eighteenth century to early nineteenth century Spain. Goya’s paintings depicted a visual time of Enlightenment that began to a lower place Charles III reign and terminate under Charles IV regime. Goya’s artistic expressions were those of life witnesses of Spain’s monarchy and the Spanish passel in battle against the barbaric tactics of the French invasion. These accounts of Goya’s sinless expressions can be seen in his published eighty etchings called Los Caprichos and a very illustrated series The Disasters of War.
Goya began his life in Fuendetodos and later move to Saragossa Spain with his family. After studying in Saragossa and Madrid he traveled to Italy. Following his return to Saragossa Spain an artist by the name of Anton Rapahel Mengs invited him to capture designs for royal tapestries in Madrid. During this time Goya learned to observe people’s behavior in order to manifest fooling activities of people’s lives in paintings. These scenes were influenced by Velazquez royal paintings, which he studied while in Rome. A great facsimile of this stage of royal paintings is the portrait of Charles IV and His Family (1801).

The portrait is similar to Velazquez’s portrait Las Meninas (1656) in the way that he represents himself in the painting behind an easel and leaves activities in the painting to the viewer’s imagination. By 1789 Goya was the court painter under the regime of Charles IV; however, his accel seasonted career was halted by the invasion of the French.
The invasion ended the era of Enlightenment that had been favored since the reign of Charles III (1759-1788).
