Development of Self-knowledge In the play, Measure for Measure, the characters Angelo and Isabella change and develop their personalities finished out the play. Angelo is a character who has no self-knowledge in the lineage of the play. Within his personality, he possesses some traits of obsessive compulsive disorder. For suit he is very perfectionist and very dogmatic towards his views in life. He is also very rigid, strict, and inflexible. Angelo has a authoritarian personality. He is arrogant, moralistic, and lacks any kind of compassion, mercy or understanding. Often, it seems he has no humanity. He is strictly adherent to the letter of the law, and he does not scud in account any considerations which other people mightiness have. At the initial moment that Angelo desires Isabella, he gains self-knowledge for the branch time. In the following quote we can see that Angelo refers to himself as a saint. O cunning enemy that, to catch a saint, With saints dost put one over thy hook. Most dangerous Is that temptation that doth goad us on To sin in loving virtue (71). Angelo believes he is a saint because he goes exactly by the letter of the law, and because he is a properly behaved person.

Angelo believes himself to be a saint, and when he is tempted by Isabella, he blames the devil for his temptation. He believes he is tempted with Isabella because of her holiness. As he says in the previous quote that because he himself is a saint, he could only be tempted by one as well. Because he grew up with such a repressed id, when he finds himself for the first time tempted he is unable to control himself and his id. He recognizes that he is evil and therefore attempts to pray. He is so distracted intellection about Isabella and after a while he realizes he is not devotedly praying, he is average saying things to perfection without really feeling them, he is all along just concentrated on Isabella.
