Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison tells a story of a black man from the south searching for freedom and personal identity during the early civil rights movement. During the prologue of the book, Ellison mentions an idea of invisibility as a daily routine, and he hints at invisibility being a state of neither life nor death. Invisibility is the vote counters sense of identity, or the lack thereof. Due to the narrators camouflage, he becomes increasingly isolated as the novel progresses.
The wide-cut novel is in first person. This allows the reader to form a close connection to the narrator as he goes done the tough lessons of life.
