David Henry Hwangs, M Butterfly, is a captivating revivewright that deals with the perceptions of gender and race in a much fantasized reality that Gillmard has encompassed himself in. The plays main character, Rene Gillamard, is a French junior-level diplomat who moved to Beijing, China with his wife, Helga. But after seeing a mesmerizing performance by a beautiful Chinese Opera singer, named Song, he quickly falls in love with this idea of love.
Gallimard married at the era of 31, to a adult female who was older than him. She was non his ideal wife, merely he felt his time was running turn out. The sad loyalty is that all men want a beautiful woman, and the uglier the man, the greater the want (Hwang 14). Because Gallimard seemed to be discontent with his life in the West, he was quick to fall for the beautiful singer he maxim one evening at the German ambassadors house in China. He was immediately captivated by Song, as she represented the cultural stereotype of a henpecked Oriental woman, yet was strong with her words. Their secret affair seemed to dig Gallimard an escape from reality and a sense of power, because it was him who was able to make up the shots in their relationship.
But as the story unfolds, we find out that this beautiful Chinese woman is not a woman at all, but a man, and a spy.
Did Gallimard sincerely not know that Song was really a man the wholly time?
